Review of year 2010-2011
2010-2011 has once again proved to be a busy year for St Helens Gilbert & Sullivan Society.
In October 2010 we took part in a concert at the Baptist Church in St Helens Town Centre, partly to say ‘Thank you’ for allowing us to use their facilities, and partly to celebrate the refurbishment of the church. This concert featured a mixture of Gilbert & Sullivan favourites and other items from stage and screen.
After auditions in September 2010, rehearsals for our production of ‘The Gondoliers’ began in earnest, culminating in a very enjoyable ‘show week’ in March 2011 at the Theatre Royal. We were joined by several young people for this production, one of whom secured the role of Luiz. Members of Wigan G & S and Warrington Light Opera also participated on stage. Photographs of the show can be viewed by clicking the link on the website.
In May 2011 we staged ‘Music for a Spring Evening’ at the Town Hall, St Helens, as part of the ‘St Helens Live 2011’ programme of events. This featured a selection of music from Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, classical and religious pieces, Irish songs and contemporary numbers, from Bach and Handel to John Denver and Cy Coleman. Again some members of Wigan G & S joined us for this concert.
Our annual dinner was held at Eccleston Park Golf Club in June 2011. Long service medals were presented to three of our members by the outgoing NODA regional secretary, Colin Magenty. It was a very enjoyable evening, and once again we were fortunate with the weather!
Our year was rounded off by the ‘Opera Concert’ in July 2011 at St Helens Town Hall. This was a collaboration between St Helens Sinfonietta and the newly formed St Helens Opera Chorus, which was made up of members of various local societies, including our own. It was a wonderful opportunity to sing some well-known opera choruses ranging from Bizet to Verdi to Offenbach, and the ‘full house’ on the night made all the hard work worthwhile.
